Rebecca @ Soe Soe Swe

In Myanmar, we have some words that scares people. Words such as feedback, change, exam, interview, the criticism and so on. Imagine that you are told by your immediate boss …..“Hi, Rebecca. I have some feedback for you”, suddenly in your mind, there is an alarm ringing very loud and you feel a bit scared as the thought of him giving you some negative comments.

The word “Change” also has the same effect on people and whenever people hear this word, they become hesitant to realize the need for it. To realize is the first stage in the Change Process. Unless you realize the current situations and circumstances of yourself, change is inevitable. How can you reach to the second stage of Change Process? Let’s see what are the stages of Change Process.

THE CHANGE PROCESS

Stage (1): Realize

You become fully aware of the current situations and understand something clearly.

Stage (2): Accept

You believe and come to recognize the current situation or something as valid or correct.

Stage (3): Internalize

You incorporate the values, patterns of culture and social norms within the self as either conscious or subconscious guiding principles through learning or socialization.

Stage (4): Decide & Plan

You decide to change and set the plan of how to change.

To give an example, think of a person who smokes cigarette, someone that would like to change his life style to healthier life style after suffering from a potentially life threatening heart problem. In order to change his lifestyle, he will definitely has to undergo four stages of the change process.

First of all, he has to realize or acknowledge the negative impacts of smoking cigarette. Then he requires to accept that all these condemning impacts is ruining his health seriously. After that, he needs to internalize the impacts of smoking cigarettes in accordance with conscious and subconscious guiding principles through learning and socialization. Based on what he has internalized, he has to make a decision and plan how to stop the habit of smoking cigarette.

According to my experience, most of us are stuck at Stage 2. We become fully aware of the current situations we find ourselves in and understand the impacts those have on us very clearly, yet we somehow find it very difficult to accept the primary problems that are causing negative impacts our life. Therefore, going through the change process successfully becomes impossible and we are stuck at the same situations for almost a certain period.

Change needs courage as it needs confidence and commitment too. If you want to change yourself and become a better person than what you are today, you must be confident in yourself and embrace it with full of courage. Just say to yourself “I can do it”.

Things that causes us to change

  1. Intentional Reasons

Some people intentionally choose to change after they realize, accept and believe in the power of CHANGE.

 2. Life Changing Experience

This relates to accidental events. For example, after experiencing a motorbike accident, a person who used to forget to wear a helmet most of the time will try and practice to wear helmet whenever he goes out with motorbike. People start to change their bad habits after they encounter catastrophic events.

 3. Learn new things

People tend to change their life into more successful one after they learn new things in life. As they learn new things and know more about the essence of life, the way they perceive their life is also changes.

 4. Forces

Sometimes people practice change when they receive “forces” from their parents, friends and environment. The scary part of this scenario, most people change in negative ways. For example, a very kind and humble young boy can change into a notorious boy when he receives forces from the family and the environments after his parent’s divorce. For some, they get overwhelmed by the characters in their surroundings and get inspired by these idols which eventually creates positive forces and push them to change.

Which is the best cause of change for us?

We must choose to change. We must believe in the power of CHANGE. CHANGE is a part of our life process. CHANGE is inevitable.  We force ourselves to change. We must embrace CHANGE if we want to succeed in life.

A PERSON WHO EMBRACES CHANGE

For me, CHANGE is a part of my life. I accept that we should always look into the opportunities of positive change. It is very interesting for me to find out “What can I do after that” and “Where can I go next”. Definitely, it was very tough and I have invested a lot of my time, energy and tears sometimes as well. I had stress before I reap my success. Every step of this change process has a story behind. I fall down many times along the way. I stood up again and again telling myself that “Rebecca, you can do it”. I believe that I will fly higher in the next few years after I make sure that I have enough fuel and my engine is ready to take off. “CHANGE” …. this is the word giving me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

The word “Change” also has the same effect on people and whenever people hear this word, they become hesitant to realize the need for it. To realize is the first stage in the Change Process.
